Val Cenis is a partner of the
"Route des Grandes Alpes" program. |

"The Route des Grandes Alpes is much more than a stretch of road that merely climbs and descends the Alps. It is a path of discovery for motorists, motorcyclists and cyclists wanting to uncover the alpine massif and its heritage at their leisure." |
As soon as the snow melts on the mountain pass, the Route des Grandes Alpes unveils the area's natural and cultural riches. Stretching from the shores of the Léman to those of the Mediterranean, the highest route in Europe invites you to discover a unique pathway through the Alps.
The Route des Grandes Alpes unfolds from Thonon to Menton, covering 697 km of departmental road, 68km of national road and 16 mountain passes, 6 of which reach an altitude of more than 2000 m with a cumulative difference in altitude of 15 713 meters. The road is fully passable from July to the 15th of October. |
Located around 30km from Val Cenis is the Iseran (2764 m), the summertime link between the two Savoyard valleys : the Tarentaise and the Maurienne. This mountain pass, which is primarily intended for tourists, is the highest alpine pass and undeniably one of the most beautiful throughout the Alps. The Col du Mont Cenis, accessible from Val Cenis, connects France and Italy. |
The diverse stages of Alpine vegetation are visible as you traverse the Route des Grandes Alpes. You will notice how the remarkable landscapes change as you traverse from the glaciers of the Col de l'Iseran and the bare grasslands of the Lautaret, to the Mediterranean olive groves. |
