The first National Park to be established in France
The Vanoise National Park
Created in 1936, the Vanoise National Park is situated in the département of Savoie and shares a frontier with its Italian counterpart, the Gran Paradiso National Park, for nearly 14 kms., thus forming the largest protected area in Western Europe.
Located between the high valleys of Maurienne and the Tarentaise, the Vanoise incorporates many peaks of more than 3000m and numerous glaciers. Despite its rugged aspect, the mountain range is notched by deep verdant valleys which open onto usually easily accessible passes.
Sheltered from maritime rainfall by the Pre-Alps and the Belledonne mountain range, the Vanoise benefits from a temperate and very sunny climate.
With a wealth of geology, flora and fauna, the varied terrain offers a broad range of countryside. The hundreds of species of flowers and the most important herd of ibex in France (about 2000 animals), together with the 6000 chamois, the golden eagles, grouse, lammergeyers, black woodpeckers and marmots, all contribute to the natural pleasure and interest of the region.
With its network of some 500kms of alpine trails and numerous warden-run mountain huts, open through spring and summer, the Vanoise National Park offers many opportunities for scenic walks and hikes.
