Walking and Hiking Suggestions around
Val Cenis and the Vanoise National Park

 

In Val Cenis the summer is is synonymous with nature and wide open spaces and, in this area on the edge of the Vanoise National Park, can be found many tracks and trails for hikers and walkers of all ages and abilities.

This is a complete guide to all there is to see and discover in Haute-Maurienne Vanoise.

Every theme is dealt with using a key which makes the guide very useful in getting to know the region. Suggestions for family treks and visits are made and there are even games for children.

SOME ROUTES TO CONSIDER IN THE MEAN TIME...
VAL CENIS LANSLEVILLARD

THE ARCELLE LAKE
RETURNING VIA THE CABLE CAR
Colour – green (3 hours)
Height Loss - 250 metres
Depart from – Vieux Moulin Cable Car

Bear left on arrival at the Solert chairlift then go along the ski run, following the markers, as far as a farm track. Take the path on the right which leads as far as the Arcelle Lake.
For the return journey –
EITHER take the path which leaves before the lake and which allows you to rejoin the Chemin de l’Histoire at Chapelle Sainte Agathe and follow it as far as the cable car
OR the path at the chapel on your right will take you back down to Lanslevillard (allow an extra 2 hours)

Practical Information
The Val Cenis lifts and cable cars are open every Wednesday and Thursday from July until August 2007.
For information, tariff for the summer 2006 were :
- Return ticket 6€
- Day Pass 9€ (unlimited use by the same person, mountain bike transport included)
Tickets are available from Val Cenis Tourist Offices and at the Vieux Moulin Cable Car office.




VALLONBRUN MOUNTAIN HUT
Colour – blue
Height Gain – 500 metres
Depart from – the car park at des Grattais
On the D902 take the vehicle track as far as the car park at des Grattais. Leave the car there and go back about 100 metres. Take the path, passing northward of the Fesse d’en Bas, then bear east by the chalets towards the mountain hut.
An alternative route – start from the Collet de la Madeleine. Behind the chapel take the path signposted GR5 across the meadows. Having gone past old chalets at the place called “Le Mollet”, the path goes west to the mountain hut at Vallonbrun, 1½ hours. 200 metres past the hut you can see the Chapel of Saint Antoine (on the Chemin de l’Histoire)

Practical Information
The “Chemins de l’Histoire” form a cultural tour, accessible to everyone, to explore at their own pace.
The idea is simple – start at the Chapelle Saint Roch and use the key (obtained from the representative at the Tourist Information Office) to open and enter this and all the chapels on the route.

VAL CENIS LANSLEBOURG
PLAINE SAINT NICOLAS - NOVALESA
Colour – blue (2½ hours one way – descent)
Height gain – 900 metres
Depart from Maison Cantonnière Plaine Saint Nicolas
Arrival : Novalesa

Park your car at the far end of Plaine Saint Nicolas. Go along the RN6 as far as the maison cantonnière on your left, from where the track will take you as far as the village of Moncenisio (take some time to look around here). Cross over and, for about 100 metres, take the little tarmac road and then the path which leads down to Novalesa.

Practical Information
Shuttle buses operate on certain days in the summer. Information from the Val Cenis Tourist Offices.
LE CUCHET
Colour – red – loop of 5 hours
Height Gain – 100 metres
Depart from – behind the Espace Baroque, Lanslebourg

Walk up the little tarmac road which crosses the Canton (the old quarter of Val Cenis Lanslebourg) and turn left at the stone cross. Take the farm track towards Pré Vaillant and then take the path on the right which leads to the mountain hut at Cuchet.
For the return journey– follow the same path back for about 250 metres as far as the edge of the Vanoise National Park and continue down in the same direction trough the pastures and then the Pramania Wood. The path cuts across the forest track several times and eventually reaches the top end of the Canton district.
