Mont Cenis: road opening and closing

The Mont Cenis Pass, and the road leading to Italy from Val Cenis Susa and Turin, is open to traffic from mid-May to mid-November. In winter, the road turns into a ski slope!

The Mont Cenis Pass Road is open

The access road to the Mont Cenis Pass (2,081 meters above sea level) and Italy has been open to traffic since Friday, May 22, 2026.

Between France and Italy, the Mont-Cenis plateau stretches to an altitude of 2,000 meters. This exceptional site offers a breathtaking panorama, with its immense turquoise lake, unspoilt mountain pastures, ancient French and Italian forts and peaks rising to over 3,000 metres.

Mont Cenis road closed in winter

The road is scheduled to close for the winter on Monday, November 9, 2026*

The pass is usually closed for the winter season starting onthe second Monday in November—which, for next winter, is Monday, November 9. In winter, much of the road becomes a ski trail: L’Escargot, the longest green trail in Europe (11 km)
