Things to do when it's hot in Val Cenis
Kayak and pedal boat
Europe's highest nautical baseAt the heart of the magnificent Mont Cenis region, at an altitude of 2000m, lies a large lake with turquoise waters: Lac du Mont Cenis.
In the summer, a water sports center lets you enjoy the lake by kayak or pedal boat. Imagine yourself pedaling or paddling amidst picture-perfect natural scenery. A true moment of joy… and cool refreshment: the lake water never gets warmer than 15°!
Please note: for safety reasons, swimming is prohibited.
Rafting and hydrospeed
And in the middle flows a riverThe river Arc, which has shaped the Maurienne valley, flows through Val Cenis. A river whose water comes from glaciers. Sitting on the banks of the river is an ideal way to cool off on a hot summer's day.
The river is also great for recreational activities. You can explore it by raftingorhydrospeeding , or even “river tubing,” a new activity that lets you float down the Arc River on an inner tube, paddle in hand. Thrilling activities that will also help you cool off!
Note: right next to the river, in Val Cenis, the Aquasensations® center at the 4 Lakes of Val Cenis offers a whole range of water activities to enjoy to your heart’s content—a real “Koh Lanta” in the mountains and the perfect way to beat the heat. Take the plunge!
The Val Cenis guides also offer a truly refreshing activity: canyoning. Give it a try right next to Val Cenis, at the Ecot Canyon. There, the Arc River is still a mountain torrent with water at… 8°C, even in the middle of summer!
Night in refuge
Sleeping with a comforter, even when it's hot in the lowlands!Have you ever slept in a mountain hut and stepped outside at dawn to watch the sun rise over the mountains? It’s both refreshing and magical! And up there, a blanket is a must—even when a heat wave is raging down in the valley!
All you have to do is choose from the fifteen or so mountain huts around Val Cenis.
Swimming in Val Cenis
Put on your swimsuits... and get in the water! When the sun is beating down, what could be better than taking a dip in the water? Take a dip in the pool at Val Cenis . With a 25 m pool, a leisure pool, a Jacuzzi and an outdoor area with a slide and paddling pool, there's plenty to do in the water and in the sun.
Near Val Cenis, you can also go swimming at the Ludi’lacs in Bessans (3 small lakes, including 1 reserved for swimming, free admission), at the La Norma water recreation center , and at the Aussois swimming pool or the Modane.
Preserve high-altitude lakes
After a hike in the mountains, a dip in a lake with cool, transparent water in idyllic surroundings can be a real treat. Although swimming in high-altitude lakes can be tempting, it is not recommended. Not only for safety reasons (thermal shock and rescue time in the event of an incident), but also to protect these fragile environments. Mountain lakes are highly sensitive, and the flora and fauna they harbor can quickly disappear if the water is disturbed by sunscreen or bacteria.
