La Canopée des Cîmes
Perched at an altitude of 2,800 meters, the Canopée des Cimes offers a spectacular view of Lake Mont-Cenis, the peaks of the Vanoise, and the Alps all the way to Italy. It is accessible in winter on skis and in summer on foot or by mountain bike from the Solert chairlift.
Description
At an altitude of 2,800 meters, at the summit of La Met—the highest point in the Val Cenis ski area—the Canopée des Cimes invites visitors to step out over the void to discover one of the resort’s most spectacular panoramic views.
This suspended platform offers a view of more than 180° over the lake and the Mont-Cenis massif, the Vanoise glaciers, and the peaks of the French and Italian Alps. On a clear day, the view extends all the way to Mont Viso and La Meije.
Sighting markers and an orientation chart help you identify the main peaks and better understand the landscapes stretching out around the Mont-Cenis Pass. Thematic panels also recount the history of this strategic passage between France and Italy and describe the major hydroelectric projects at Mont-Cenis, completed between 1962 and 1968.
With a diameter of 7.5 meters, the Canopée des Cimes can accommodate about fifteen people at a time. Its lightweight architecture, consisting mainly of masts and cables, was designed to blend discreetly into this high-mountain landscape.
In winter, access is reserved for skiers: the Canopée des Cimes is located at the summit of the Val Cenis ski area.
In summer, it is accessible to hikers and mountain bikers via the Solert chairlift, followed by a walk to the platform from the lift’s top station.
It’s an experience that’s both contemplative and dizzying, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the vast open spaces of Val Cenis and Mont-Cenis.
