European Heritage Day - Visit to the Chapel of St. Roch in Lanslevillard

St. Roch's Chapel was built in 1634 following the Great Plague of 1629–1630, which wiped out a quarter of the population. It houses religious objects, statues from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as artifacts from Gallo-Roman tombs.

Description

Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian were invoked to ward off the recurring plague epidemics that decimated the population as a result of travelers and armies passing through Mont Cenis. The plague wiped out a quarter of the village’s population.

The Saint Roch Chapel is the starting point for “The Paths of History,” a vast open-air museum exploring the chapels of Lanslevillard and the lives of the mountain communities. The temporary exhibition is dedicated to the weeping woman, Termignon’s iconic war memorial.
