Exhibition - "The Tables of the Law" by Robin Suiffet
Robin Suiffet explores the effect created by the perception of immensity and presents his new exhibition, titled "Les Tables de la Loi." It consists of books and boxes in very small formats, displayed in tilted showcases.
Description
A place of prayer, a place of contemplation
"Gazing at the immensity brings one back down to earth. Mountains and places of prayer have a similar effect," reads the event poster. With Robin Suiffet’s now regular exhibitions, the Mont-Cenis pyramid (Notre-Dame de l’Assomption chapel), a place of prayer, has also become a unique exhibition venue. Suiffet, from Lanslebourg, explores the effect produced by the perception of immensity. Paradoxically, this year he is doing so with very small formats, displayed in slanted showcases. These books and boxes are unique in that they are sealed. On the lids of the boxes and the covers of the books, the viewer will find small oil paintings and monotypes (prints) that offer clues to the contents of the volumes. This content resonates with the titles of the works: each title is a Latin legal phrase. These small, mysterious objects thus become windows onto the immense scales they address. They encourage meditation in a fitting setting, combining prayer in this chapel with contemplation of the impressive Mont-Cenis plateau.
The Tables of the Law
You won’t see Moses’ Tables of the Law at Mont-Cenis, but rather, exhibition tables dealing with a legal subject. Each of the works on display is a reminder of a golden rule of law. In this way, these small, hermetic volumes contain something universal: principles that are all too often neglected, both in our consciences and at a time when international law has rarely seemed so precarious. This is the meaning of the seals on each of the works: the title indicates the subject, the image suggests a direction, and the seal preserves and amplifies the potential for reflection on the subject.
