The mourning woman is the emblem of Termignon. This war memorial, depicting a woman in period costume holding her face, symbolizes every mother who waits in vain for the return of her children, who have gone to defend the country. It is the work of the sculptor Lucien Jaggi.

Description

The war memorial, depicting a woman in traditional dress holding her face, is one of the very few in France to feature a woman. The project originated from the desire of World War I veterans from Termignon to break with tradition. Médard Floret proposed a woman in local costume, weeping and holding her face, and he managed to convince the mayor at the time, Léon Martyn, and the town council. The project was entrusted to the renowned Geneva sculptor Luc Jaggi, whose mother was from Termignon. Unveiled on April 26, 1931, the mourning woman was intended above all as a monument to peace.
