Energy management for ski resorts

Val Cenisa resort committed to sustainable development, is constantly innovating to combine technological performance and energy efficiency. Thanks to intelligent management systems, the ski lifts adapt in real time to the number of visitors, reducing their energy impact while offering skiers optimum service.

Less traffic, less speed

And less energy consumption 😉

At Val Cenis, energy management for ski lifts is based on a simple but effective principle: consume just what you need, when you need it. Innovative systems are fitted to gondolas and chairlifts, allowing speed and power to be adapted to the number of visitors.

For example, in off-peak periods, such as January or lunchtime in March, the Val Cenis Le Haut gondola and the Arcelle and La Ramasse chairlifts automatically slow down. This reduction in speed means a significant reduction in electricity consumption, while continuing to offer a fluid service for the skiers present.

On the other hand, during peak periods, these devices speed up the flow to ensure shorter waiting times and optimum comfort. This intelligent management system is a model ofenergy efficiency, perfectly illustrating Val Cenis 's commitment to sustainable mountain development.

Energy recovery and reuse

A virtuous circle ♻️

The resort of Val Cenis doesn't stop at optimizing electricity consumption: it also innovates by recovering and reusing the energy produced by its facilities. An excellent example is the hors-sac room at the top of the Vieux Moulin gondola. Heated using heat recovered from the of the gondola, it illustrates a circular approach where nothing is wasted.

This latest-generation gondola lift, which will go into service in 2020, also consumes much less energy than older installations. Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, it combines energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and user comfort.

These initiatives show that modernity and sustainability can go hand in hand. In fact, the resort recently inaugurated a new low-carbon footprint chairlift using recycled material.

Optimizing the energy management of ski lifts

  • Raising driver awareness through eco-driving training (speed reduction to match traffic flow, fewer stops, etc.).
  • Redundant lifts shut down outside peak periods (Pré Novel, Pont des Chèvres and Lac closed every Saturday).
  • Installation of photovoltaic panels on certain control rooms to ensure electrical autonomy (radio base, radiator, microwave) Photo attached (see e-mail of January 9)
  • Control system on radiators to reduce heating during absences (control rooms and buildings)

Grooming optimization

  • Groomers equipped with GPS to optimize grooming according to snow depths
  • Eco-driving training for groomers
  • In 2022, Val Cenis will be the first French resort to equip itself with an electric snow groomer to reduce the use of fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions and fine particles in the mountains.
